Bourbonese Qualk nasceram no seio da cultura de squatting de Southport, na costa Inglesa. Experimentais, livres de regras ou códigos, sempre apostaram numa fusão de sinais para que as composições se vissem livres de categorizações. Com um enquadramento na reivindicação das liberdades perdidas aquando da soberania de Margaret Thatcher, "Preparing for Power" foi o último na Recloose Organisation, de onde a banda operava no âmago dos 80s. Trabalhando à margem, a música, por natureza própria, grita e reclama liberdade. "Return to Order" principia com um loop em fita, criando uma soundscape diferente, mais barulhenta, contrastando com a sequência em guitarra que se lhe segue: bonita, etérea, onírica. Aposta em composições com uma miríade de instrumentos diferentes, sejam eles acústicos ou electrónicos, como as caixas de ritmos e os sintetizadores que se vão ouvindo esporadicamente ao longo do disco e por entre as guitarras, as linhas de baixo viçosas e a bateria, alta, bruta na mistura. Álbum de contrastes, de coerções e recompensas, com laivos de uma musicalidade óbvia, mais acessível aos ouvidos (como a que se apanha em "Outcry","LIES" ou "Is It As It Was", quase saídas do seio do rock alternativo/pós-punk inglês e com as suas linhas de guitarra mergulhada em sonhos e efeitos). Feixes de luz que costumam fugir aos discos categorizados como Industrial, evidentemente brutos, frios, austeros. "Preparing for Power", manifestando liberdade de forma impreterível, é uma reedição mais do que urgente pela Mannequin e pela Platform 23, que têm vindo a recuperar algumas obras-primas da música Industrial dos anos 80 e 90.
"The last recorded album at their South London squat, The Ambulance Station on the Old Kent Road, and again released on their own Recloose Organisation, saw the band develop further beyond the limits of the post-punk / industrial scene where genres increasingly became redundant. Ethno, jazz, funk and EBM are all buried deep in the album as it seeks independence. The title, a critique of the Labour movements ineffective and limited call to arms against the prevailing Thatcherism of the mid-80s, encapsulates this wider oeuvre. From opening Return To Order, the acoustic gloom is offset by tight musicianship and countering melody. The switch of Outcry precedes psychedelic anthem, Boggy Creek, with its VU remembrance. Blighted pulses Confrontation, Xenophobia, Backlash and closer, Insurrection, sense the darkness, but the ground has shifted forwards with the legendary 1.51 minutes of man’n’ machine that is Lies, the enwrapping symphonic dub vocal of Born Left Hearted and incongruously pretty, Is It As It Was? At times, suffocating, uncomfortable, at others light appears as history progresses. Preparing For Power is BQ at their most uncompromising and essential." (Label PR)
