BLEDDYN BUTCHER A Little History – Nick Cave & Cohorts, 1981-2013 LIVRO

€ 9,95 LIVRO Allen & Unwin

hard cover, 160 páginas, 22 x 29 cm.

“Bleddyn Butcher has been taking pictures of me and my cohorts since I first got up on stage back in Australia right through to the shuddering present and some of these images are so familiar to me, so much a part of the fabric of my life, my little history, that much like the songs I have written, these photographs have become the props around which my memories collect. Without them so many of those days would be lost. Soul-stealer and dream-catcher – here he comes then – with his book of rescued moments.” Nick Cave

When Bleddyn Butcher first saw The Birthday Party play, back in 1981, he was astonished. And then enthralled. He set about trying to catch their lightning in his Nikon F2AS. That quixotic impulse became a lifelong quest. A little history got made on the way. Collected here for the first time are the fruits of his labour. A Little History is an extraordinary document, tracking Nick Cave’s creative career from the apoplectic extravagance of The Birthday Party to the calmer disquiet of 2013′s Push The Sky Away via snapshots, spotlit visions and sumptuous, theatrical portraits. It mixes the candid and uncanny, the spontaneous and the patiently staged, and includes eyeball encounters with Cave’s baddest lieutenants, men for the most part who long since burned their own bridges down.
Butcher’s Nikonic eye defines moment after arresting moment in Cave’s glorious, sprawling story: it’s a splendid testament to two brilliant careers.

TONY WILSON 24 Hour Party People LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Pan / MacMillan Books

paperback, 272 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“‘The musicians own everything. The company owns nothing. All our bands have the freedom to f**k off’
Written in blood, The Factory non-contract set out the manifesto for one of the most influential and progressive record labels of our time…
Manchester, 1976: Anthony Wilson, Granada TV presenter, is at an early Sex Pistols gig. Inspired by this pivotal moment in music history, he and his friends set up Factory Records. They go on to conquer the world with Joy Division (who become New Order) then again with the Happy Mondays.
Riding high on their success and just about keeping the business afloat, the Factory directors decide to give something back to their city, to open a club – The Hacienda. Packed on opening night but losing money hand over fist for the first five years, The Hacienda and the Happy Mondays take their unique brand of hedonism to breaking point.

MARK E. SMITH Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E. Smith LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Penguin Books

paperback, 256 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Still going after thirty years, The Fall are one of the most distinctive British bands, their music – odd, spare, cranky and repetitious – an acknowledged influence on The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, Nirvana and Franz Ferdinand. And Mark E. Smith IS The Fall – 47 members have come and gone over the years yet he remains its charismatic leader, a professional outsider and all-round enemy of compromise, a true enigma. There have been a number of biographies of the legendary Smith, but this is the first time he has opened up in a full autobiography. For the first time we get to hear his full, candid take on the ups and downs of a band as notorious for its in-house fighting as for its great music; and on a life that has endured prison in America, drugs, bankruptcy, divorce, and the often bleak results of a legendary thirst.”

PETER HOOK Haçienda: How Not To Run A Club LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Pocket Books

paperback, 362 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Peter Hook, as co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, has been shaping the course of popular music for thirty years. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and the bestselling 12-inch single ever, ‘Blue Monday’ among many other songs. As co-owner of Manchester’s Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created. This is his memory of that era and ‘it’s far sadder, funnier, scarier and stranger’ than anyone has imagined.
As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world and had top ten hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid £20 per week. Peter Hook looked back at that exciting and hilarious time to write HACIENDA. All the main characters appear – Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder – and Hook tells it like it was – a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion and true faith.”

TONY VISCONTI The Autobiography: Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Harper

paperback, 394 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“A name synonymous with ground-breaking music, Tony Visconti has worked with the most dynamic and influential names in pop, from T.Rex and Iggy Pop to David Bowie and U2. This is the compelling life story of the man who helped shape music history, and gives a unique, first-hand insight into life in London during the late 1960s and ’70s.
This memoir takes you on a roller-coaster journey through the glory days of pop music, when men wore sequins and pop could truly rock. Featuring behind-the-scenes stories of big names such as Bowie, Visconti’s unique access to the hottest talent, both on stage and off, for over five decades is complemented by unseen photographs from his own personal archive, offering a glimpse at music history that few have witnessed so intimately.
Soon after abandoning his native New York to pursue his musical career in the UK, Visconti was soon in the thick of the emerging glam rock movement, launching T.Rex to commercial success and working with the then-unknown David Bowie.
Since his fateful move to the land of tea and beer drunk straight from the can, Visconti has worked with such names as T.Rex, Thin Lizzy, Wings, The Boomtown Rats, Marsha Hunt, Procol Harum, and more recently Ziggy Marley, Mercury Rev, the Manic Street Preachers and Morrissey on his acclaimed new album ‘Ringleader of the Tormentors’.
Even Visconti’s personal life betrays an existence utterly immersed in music. Married to first to Siegrid Berman, then to Mary Hopkin and later to May Pang, he counts many of the musicians and producers he has worked with as close friends and is himself a celebrated musician.”

MATT THORNE Prince LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO (updated edition) Orion Books

paperback, 581 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Legendarily reticent, perverse and misleading, Prince is one of the few remaining 80s superstars who still, perhaps, remains unexplained. Now a firm fixture in the pop canon, where such classics as ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Sign o’ the Times’ and ‘Parade’ regularly feature in Best Ever Album polls, Prince is still, as he ever was, an enigma. His live performances are legendary (21 Nights at the O2 in 2007) and while recent releases have been modestly successful at best, his influence on urban music, and R’n'B in particular, has never been more evident. The Minneapolis Sound can now be heard everywhere.
Matt Thorne’s Prince, through years of research and interviews with ex-Revolution members such as Wendy and Lisa, is an account of a pop maverick whose experiments with rock, funk, techno and jazz revolutionised pop. With reference to every song, released and unreleased, over 35 years of recording, Prince will stand for years to come as the go-to book on the Great Man.”

MICK WALL A Biography Of Led Zeppelin: When Giants Walked The Earth LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Orion Books

paperback, 536 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“They were ‘the last great band of the sixties; the first great band of the seventies’; they rose, somewhat unpromisingly, from the ashes of the Yardbirds to become one of the biggest-selling rock bands of all time. Mick Wall, respected rock writer and former confidant of both Page and Plant, unflinchingly tells the story of the band that wrote the rulebook for on-the-road excess – and eventually paid the price for it, with disaster, drug addiction and death.
WHEN GIANTS WALKED THE EARTH reveals for the first time the true extent of band leader Jimmy Page’s longstanding interest in the occult, and goes behind the scenes to expose the truth behind their much-hyped yet spectacularly contrived comeback at London’s O2 arena last year, and how Jimmy Page plans to bring the band back permanently – if only his former protégé, now part-time nemesis, Robert Plant will allow him to. Wall also recounts, in a series of flashbacks, the life stories of the five individuals that made the dream of Led Zeppelin into an even more incredible and hard-to-swallow reality: Page, Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and their infamous manager, Peter Grant.
The culmination of several years research, this book tells the full, shocking story of Led Zeppelin from the inside, written by someone who has known Jimmy Page for over twenty years.”

TOM WAITS / PAUL MAHER JR. Tom Waits on Tom Waits: Interviews And Encounters LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Aurum

paperback, 468 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Tom Waits may just be what the Daily Telegraph calls him: ‘the greatest entertainer on Planet Earth.’ He is also a shape-shifter who, over a span of almost four decades, has restlessly transformed his song-writing and persona not to suit the times but his own whims. Along with Bob Dylan, he stands as one of American music’s last great mysteries. Hundreds of journalists have sought to crack the Waits code, but few have come close to piercing the myths that shroud him. Tom Waits on Tom Waits is a selection of over fifty of his most intriguing interviews, the majority of which have never been collected in book form before. In each Waits shares something truly unique, delivering prose as crafted, poetic, potent and haunting as his best lyrics. Taken together they present a de facto autobiography of a notoriously guarded artist.”

JEFF CHANG Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Ebury Press

Documento.

VICTOR BOCKRIS Transformer: The Complete Lou Reed Story LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Harper

paperback, 560 páginas, 13,3 x 19,7 cm.

“Transformer is the only complete and comprehensive telling of the Lou Reed story.
Legendary songwriter and guitarist Lou Reed passed away on the 27th October 2013, but his musical influence is assured. Now discover the true story of the Velvet Underground pioneer in this update of Bockris’s classic biography.
Transformer: The Complete Lou Reed Story follows the great songwriter and singer through the series of transformations that define each period of his fifty year career. It opens with the teenage electroshock treatments that dominated his memories of childhood and never stops revealing layer after layer of this complex and often anguished artist and man. Transformer is based on Lou’s collaborations with the hardest and most romantic artists of his times, from John Cale, Andy Warhol, and Nico, through David Bowie, Robert Wilson, Laurie Anderson and the ghost of Edgar Alan Poe. Rippling underneath everything he did are Lou’s relationships with his various muses, from his college sweetheart to his three wives (and one drag queen).
Leading Lou Reed biographer, Victor Bockris – who knew Lou throughout the Rachel Years, from Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal to the Bells – updates his original biography in the wake of Lou’s death. Through new interviews and photos, he reveals the many transformations of this larger-than-life character, including his final shift from Rock Monster to the Prince Charming he had always wanted to be in the twenty years he spent with the love of his life, Laurie Anderson . Except with Lou, you could never really know what might happen next…
Including previously unseen photographs and contributions from Lou’s innermost circle and collaborators that include similarly esteemed artists such as Andy Warhol and David Bowie, Transformer is as captivating and vivid a read as befits an American master.”

CLINTON HEYLIN Revolution in the Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan Vol.1 1957-1973 LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Constable

paperback, 608 páginas, 13,5 x 20 cm.

“Bob Dylan has always regarded himself as a songwriter: ‘I am my words,’ he wrote in 1964.
Distilling a lifetime’s passion and study, leading Dylan author, Clinton Heylin charts the development and first moments of genius of this unique artist whose songs changed the world.
From his first attempts at writing, Song to Bridget, in 1957, (apparently for Brigitte Bardot) Bob Dylan always aspired to poetry, yet his role as a writer rather than a performer of his own songs is often overlooked. In over fifty years of creativity he had penned some of the most iconic, and perfect, songs in popular history. Arriving in New York in 1961, the city had an enormous impact on the young artist and, as he established himself amongst the folk clubs and artists, he would produce songs that spoke for a whole generation: Blowing in the Wind, A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall, The Times They Are a Changin’, Like a Rolling Stone, and Forever Young.
In Revolution in the Air Clinton Heylin recounts the story of each song as it is written, giving a full appreciation of the songs themselves as well as Dylan the emerging artist. Unlike any other book on Dylan, it charts his rise as a writer, where he gained his inspiration, the burst of energy which produced some of his most famous songs as well as the lesser known stories behind the more iconic verses.
This is an essential book for anyone interested in Dylan and his place in literature. Informative, opinionated, packed with new insights and revelations, this is an instant classic.”

MICK MIDDLES Factory: The Story of the Record Label LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Virgin Books

paperback, 480 páginas, 12,9 x 19,8 cm.

“Factory Records’ fame and fortune were based on two bands – Joy Division and New Order – and one personality – that of its director, Tony Wilson. At the height of the label’s success in the late 1980s, it ran its own club, the legendary Haçienda, had a string of international hit records, and was admired and emulated around the world. But by the 1990s the story had changed. The back catalogue was sold off, top bands New Order and Happy Mondays were in disarray, and the Haçienda was shut down by the police.
Critically acclaimed on its original publication in 1996, this book tells the complete story of Factory Records’ spectacular history, from the label’s birth in 1970s Manchester, through its ’80s heyday and ’90s demise. Now updated to include new material on the re-emergence of Joy Division, the death of Tony Wilson and the legacy of Factory Records, it draws on exclusive interviews with the major players to give a fascinating insight into the unique personalities and chaotic reality behind one of the UK’s most influential and successful independent record labels.”

ANTÓNIO DUARTE A Arte Eléctrica De Ser Português: 25 Anos de Rock ‘n Portugal LIVRO

€ 14,95 LIVRO Livraria Bertrand

RICHIE UNTERBERGER Won’t Get Fooled Again: The Who From Lifehouse To Quadrophenia LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Jaw Bone

paperback, 306 páginas, 15,5 x 21,5 cm.

“From mid-1970 to early 1974, The Who undertook an amazing and peculiar journey in which they struggled to follow up “Tommy” with a yet bigger and better rock opera. One of those projects, “Lifehouse”, was never completed, though many of its songs formed the bulk of the classic 1971 album “Who’s Next”. The other, “Quadrophenia”, was as down-to-earth as the multimedia “Lifehouse” was futuristic; issued as a double album in 1973, it eventually became esteemed as one of the Who’s finest achievements, despite initial unfavourable comparisons to Tommy. Along the way, the group’s visionary songwriter, Pete Townshend, battled conflicts within the band and their management, as well as struggling against the limits of the era’s technology as a pioneering synthesizer user and a conceptualist trying to combine rock with film and theatre. The results included some of rock’s most ambitious failures, and some of its most spectacular triumphs. In “Won’t Get Fooled Again: The Who From Lifehouse to Quadrophenia”, noted rock writer and historian Richie Unterberger documents this intriguing period in detail, drawing on many new interviews; obscure rare archive sources and recordings; and a vast knowledge of the music of the times. The result is a comprehensive, articulate history that sheds new light on the band’s innovations and Pete Townshend’s massive ambitions, some of which still seem ahead of their time in the early 21st century.”
