MICHAEL DIAMOND / ADAM HOROVITZ Beastie Boys Book LIVRO

€ 26,50 LIVRO Faber & Faber

hard cover, 592 páginas, 17 x 25cm.

EM BREVE / SOON

“Formed as a New York City hardcore band in 1981, Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band. Adam “AD-ROCK” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album Licensed to Ill; that album’s messy fallout; their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique. For more than twenty years, this band has had a wide-ranging and lasting influence on popular culture. With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir. Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys’ New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises.”

SEI MIGUEL Livro Das Imagens: 2012-2013-2014-2015 LIVRO

€ 15,00 LIVRO O Homem Do Saco / Marmita De Gigante

MIKE LOVE Good Vibrations: My Life As A Beach Boy LIVRO

€ 11,50 LIVRO Faber & Faber

hard cover, 436 páginas, 16 x 24 cm.

“Mike Love is a founding member of the Beach Boys and the lead singer and lyricist of their biggest hits. With their lush vocals and endlessly inventive arrangements, the band forged art from songs about cars, surfing and first love. But beneath the Beach Boys’ wholesome appearance lurked darker truths: drugs and dissent, deceit and betrayal, illness and infidelity, line-up changes and litigation. In Good Vibrations, Mike Love tells the unvarnished story of his five-decade tenure as frontman of the quintessential American band, whose music continues to reverberate today.”

RAY CONNOLLY Being Elvis: A Lonely Life LIVRO

€ 9,50 LIVRO Weidenfeld & Nicolson

paperback, 362 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“What was it like to be Elvis Presley? What did it feel like when impossible fame made him its prisoner? As the world’s first rock star there was no one to tell him what to expect, no one with whom he could share the burden of being himself – of being Elvis.
On the outside he was all charm, sex appeal, outrageously confident on stage and stunningly gifted in the recording studio. To his fans he seemed to have it all. He was Elvis. With his voice and style influencing succeeding generations of musicians, he should have been free to sing any song he liked, to star in any film he was offered, and to tour in any country he chose.
But he wasn’t free. The circumstances of his poor beginnings in the American South, which, as he blended gospel music with black rhythm and blues and white country songs, helped him create rock and roll, had left him with a lifelong vulnerability. Made rich and famous beyond his wildest imaginings when he mortgaged his talent to the machinations of his manager, ‘Colonel’ Tom Parker, there would be an inevitable price to pay. Though he daydreamed of becoming a serious film actor, instead he grew to despise his own movies and many of the songs he had to sing in them. He could have rebelled. But he didn’t. Why? In the Seventies, as the hits rolled in again, and millions of fans saw him in a second career as he sang his way across America, he talked of wanting to tour the world. But he never did. What was stopping him?
BEING ELVIS takes a clear-eyed look at the most-loved entertainer ever, and finds an unusual boy with a dazzling talent who grew up to change popular culture; a man who sold a billion records and had more hits than any other singer, but who became trapped by his own frailties in the loneliness of fame.”

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Born To Run: An Autobiography LIVRO

€ 8,95 LIVRO Simon & Schuster

hardcover, 528 páginas, 16.7 x 26 cm.

“In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began.
Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humour, and originality found in his songs.

He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid the poetry, danger, and darkness that fuelled his imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work and shows us why the song “Born to Run” reveals more than we previously realized.

Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks, or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock and roll.

Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (“Thunder Road,” “Badlands,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A.,” “The Rising,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” to name just a few), Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.”

SIMON REYNOLDS Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy LIVRO

€ 11,50 LIVRO Faber & Faber

Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass” (“Hall Of Mirrors”). Basta. Leiam. Está a um terço do preço de capa original. Capa dura. Com um flash vistoso.

PETER HOOK Substance: Inside New Order LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Simon & Schuster

paperback, 768 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Two acclaimed albums and an upcoming US tour – Joy Division had the world at their feet. Then, on the eve of that tour, the band’s troubled lead singer, Ian Curtis, killed himself. The next time they got together, they were a new band.
That band was New Order – their label was Factory Records, their club The Haçienda. Their distinctive sound paved the way for the dance music explosion that followed, earning them the reputation as one of the most influential bands of their generation, and changing the course of popular music.
Following on from his bestselling titles The Haçienda and Unknown Pleasures, Peter Hook has written a rollicking, no-holds-barred account of the band’s entire history. Substance is packed with never-before-seen detail, discographies and technical information. This is possibly the most entertaining memoir ever written by a British musician.”

DAVE HASLAM Life After Dark. A History Of British Nightclubs & Music Venues LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Simon & Schuster

paperback, 480 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Nightclubs and music venues are often the source of a lifetime’s music taste, best friends and vivid memories. They can define a town, a city or a generation, and breed scenes and bands that change music history. In Life After Dark Dave Haslam reveals and celebrates a definitive history of significant venues and great nights out. Writing with passion and authority, he takes us from vice-ridden Victorian dance halls to acid house and beyond; through the jazz decades of luxurious ballrooms to mods in basement dives and the venues that nurtured the Beatles, the Stones, Northern Soul and the Sex Pistols; from psychedelic light shows to high street discos; from the Roxy to the Hacienda; from the Krays to the Slits; and from reggae sound systems to rave nights in Stoke.

In a journey to dozens of towns and cities, taking in hundreds of unforgettable stories on the way, Haslam explores the sleaziness, the changing fashions, the moral panics and the cultural and commercial history of nightlife. He interviews clubbers and venue owners, as well as DJs and musicians; he meets one of the gangsters who nearly destroyed Manchester’s nightlife and discusses Goth clubs in Leeds with David Peace.”

BLEDDYN BUTCHER A Little History – Nick Cave & Cohorts, 1981-2013 LIVRO

€ 9,95 LIVRO Allen & Unwin

hard cover, 160 páginas, 22 x 29 cm.

“Bleddyn Butcher has been taking pictures of me and my cohorts since I first got up on stage back in Australia right through to the shuddering present and some of these images are so familiar to me, so much a part of the fabric of my life, my little history, that much like the songs I have written, these photographs have become the props around which my memories collect. Without them so many of those days would be lost. Soul-stealer and dream-catcher – here he comes then – with his book of rescued moments.” Nick Cave

When Bleddyn Butcher first saw The Birthday Party play, back in 1981, he was astonished. And then enthralled. He set about trying to catch their lightning in his Nikon F2AS. That quixotic impulse became a lifelong quest. A little history got made on the way. Collected here for the first time are the fruits of his labour. A Little History is an extraordinary document, tracking Nick Cave’s creative career from the apoplectic extravagance of The Birthday Party to the calmer disquiet of 2013′s Push The Sky Away via snapshots, spotlit visions and sumptuous, theatrical portraits. It mixes the candid and uncanny, the spontaneous and the patiently staged, and includes eyeball encounters with Cave’s baddest lieutenants, men for the most part who long since burned their own bridges down.
Butcher’s Nikonic eye defines moment after arresting moment in Cave’s glorious, sprawling story: it’s a splendid testament to two brilliant careers.

MARK E. SMITH Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E. Smith LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Penguin Books

paperback, 256 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Still going after thirty years, The Fall are one of the most distinctive British bands, their music – odd, spare, cranky and repetitious – an acknowledged influence on The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, Nirvana and Franz Ferdinand. And Mark E. Smith IS The Fall – 47 members have come and gone over the years yet he remains its charismatic leader, a professional outsider and all-round enemy of compromise, a true enigma. There have been a number of biographies of the legendary Smith, but this is the first time he has opened up in a full autobiography. For the first time we get to hear his full, candid take on the ups and downs of a band as notorious for its in-house fighting as for its great music; and on a life that has endured prison in America, drugs, bankruptcy, divorce, and the often bleak results of a legendary thirst.”

PETER HOOK Haçienda: How Not To Run A Club LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Pocket Books

paperback, 362 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Peter Hook, as co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, has been shaping the course of popular music for thirty years. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and the bestselling 12-inch single ever, ‘Blue Monday’ among many other songs. As co-owner of Manchester’s Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created. This is his memory of that era and ‘it’s far sadder, funnier, scarier and stranger’ than anyone has imagined.
As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world and had top ten hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid £20 per week. Peter Hook looked back at that exciting and hilarious time to write HACIENDA. All the main characters appear – Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder – and Hook tells it like it was – a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion and true faith.”

TONY VISCONTI The Autobiography: Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Harper

paperback, 394 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“A name synonymous with ground-breaking music, Tony Visconti has worked with the most dynamic and influential names in pop, from T.Rex and Iggy Pop to David Bowie and U2. This is the compelling life story of the man who helped shape music history, and gives a unique, first-hand insight into life in London during the late 1960s and ’70s.
This memoir takes you on a roller-coaster journey through the glory days of pop music, when men wore sequins and pop could truly rock. Featuring behind-the-scenes stories of big names such as Bowie, Visconti’s unique access to the hottest talent, both on stage and off, for over five decades is complemented by unseen photographs from his own personal archive, offering a glimpse at music history that few have witnessed so intimately.
Soon after abandoning his native New York to pursue his musical career in the UK, Visconti was soon in the thick of the emerging glam rock movement, launching T.Rex to commercial success and working with the then-unknown David Bowie.
Since his fateful move to the land of tea and beer drunk straight from the can, Visconti has worked with such names as T.Rex, Thin Lizzy, Wings, The Boomtown Rats, Marsha Hunt, Procol Harum, and more recently Ziggy Marley, Mercury Rev, the Manic Street Preachers and Morrissey on his acclaimed new album ‘Ringleader of the Tormentors’.
Even Visconti’s personal life betrays an existence utterly immersed in music. Married to first to Siegrid Berman, then to Mary Hopkin and later to May Pang, he counts many of the musicians and producers he has worked with as close friends and is himself a celebrated musician.”

MATT THORNE Prince LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO (updated edition) Orion Books

paperback, 581 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“Legendarily reticent, perverse and misleading, Prince is one of the few remaining 80s superstars who still, perhaps, remains unexplained. Now a firm fixture in the pop canon, where such classics as ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Sign o’ the Times’ and ‘Parade’ regularly feature in Best Ever Album polls, Prince is still, as he ever was, an enigma. His live performances are legendary (21 Nights at the O2 in 2007) and while recent releases have been modestly successful at best, his influence on urban music, and R’n'B in particular, has never been more evident. The Minneapolis Sound can now be heard everywhere.
Matt Thorne’s Prince, through years of research and interviews with ex-Revolution members such as Wendy and Lisa, is an account of a pop maverick whose experiments with rock, funk, techno and jazz revolutionised pop. With reference to every song, released and unreleased, over 35 years of recording, Prince will stand for years to come as the go-to book on the Great Man.”

MICK WALL A Biography Of Led Zeppelin: When Giants Walked The Earth LIVRO

€ 6,50 LIVRO Orion Books

paperback, 536 páginas, 13 x 20 cm.

“They were ‘the last great band of the sixties; the first great band of the seventies’; they rose, somewhat unpromisingly, from the ashes of the Yardbirds to become one of the biggest-selling rock bands of all time. Mick Wall, respected rock writer and former confidant of both Page and Plant, unflinchingly tells the story of the band that wrote the rulebook for on-the-road excess – and eventually paid the price for it, with disaster, drug addiction and death.
WHEN GIANTS WALKED THE EARTH reveals for the first time the true extent of band leader Jimmy Page’s longstanding interest in the occult, and goes behind the scenes to expose the truth behind their much-hyped yet spectacularly contrived comeback at London’s O2 arena last year, and how Jimmy Page plans to bring the band back permanently – if only his former protégé, now part-time nemesis, Robert Plant will allow him to. Wall also recounts, in a series of flashbacks, the life stories of the five individuals that made the dream of Led Zeppelin into an even more incredible and hard-to-swallow reality: Page, Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and their infamous manager, Peter Grant.
The culmination of several years research, this book tells the full, shocking story of Led Zeppelin from the inside, written by someone who has known Jimmy Page for over twenty years.”
